Kimono question

For those that have used buttons for the closure instead of the ribbons, how are you attaching the two sides? Are you creating crochet loops to go around the buttons, or just spontaneously buttonholing on the bottom part of the kimono? The thought of spontaneous buttonhole making seems kinda scary. Any help would be grealy appreciated. Thanks in advance! =)

Comments:
Hopefully, this makes sense. The length of that portion of my kimono front was 2.5". I placed button one at .5" and button two at 2.0" length. I then used thread to sew them on the corresponding spot on the other side.

I had to make some bigger holes, because my buttons were big. I used the technique in "Stitch 'n' Bitch".

I also used one of the yarnovers in the edging for a buttonhole.

I may have spontaneously button-holed though I'd never attached that adjective to my buttonholes. I just kept looking at it and thinking and when the time seemed right ... buttonhole. Then I took the cute little thing shopping for buttons and tried them on the buttonholes until I found some that looked right. And fit.
