Absorba

I'm 9 strips into my absorba and find that the mat is not rectangular, but comes in at the middle.

Is this because I'm picking up too many stitches at the end of the rows? I'm picking up a stitch for every row. I now remember that a good rule of thumb for picking up stitches along the row side is to pick up 3 stitches for every 4 rows.

For those of you who've knitted this (or have done any log cabin knitting) is this a common problem?

Comments:
I did mine with a few extra ridges on the first two rectangular sides to make a more obvious rectangle (and I'm still working on it), but I picked up one for each row and didn't get the bow. Not sure what that would be.

Yeah, I think I did the same thing you did or increased somewhere along the line so that one end is a little bigger than the other? Guess I'll be more careful next time but it would be nice to know just what I did wrong...

That should be 1 stitch for every RIDGE not every row. Maybe you meant ridge and typed row, but if not I'd say that's definitely the problem. A ridge is two rows, and you pick up one stitich out of each ridge.

when I made my log cabin blanket I mostly picked up every stitch, except on the ends where I was picking up the edge of the last row, where I picked up one for each garter stitch. Does that make sense?

aimee, you are right, i meant ridge, not row on mine and no bumps or bows.

I picked up one for each row - so that's why it's coming out wonky. If I knitted six rows, then I picked up six stitches.

Thanks for the clarification. I'll have the rip this out and start over again from the first square. It just doesn't look good right now.

Also, where do you put the 10th strip? I have the center square and two strips on each side - that comes up to 9 strips. Adding a 10th strip goes against my "Monk-ish" ways of liking symmetry.
