Mason-Dixon Mania

Last Friday, I had a doctor's appointment in Buckhead, and I was early, so I decided to stop in and check out my now newest favorite ITP (inside the perimeter) yarn store, Why Knot Knit. I wanted to get a copy of Mason Dixon Knitting. I'd read all about it, and had actually done some log cabin knitting the week before based on Sarah Bradberry's directions. But I wanted to see the real thing. The shop owner, Monica, sold me her personal copy. She was hiding it in her car, but she can't seem to ever get a copy home.

Anyway, I went from Buckhead to Snellville, and Hobby Lobby, where, fortunately, they were having a sale on Sugar and Cream. I bought the yarn for:

ABSORBA: A cone of ecru, 4 balls of jute, 4 balls of soft ecru, 5 balls of natural ombre. I used 15's, as prescribed, and it is larger than I thought. So, it is now on the floor of my kitchen rather than the bathroom. The Crocs are ladies 8-9 for size comparison. I finished it last night, so it took less than a week.

While working on Absorba, I became a little obsessed with potholder loops. I went first to JoAnns and bought some, but they turned out to be nylon. YUCK!
So, back to Hobby Lobby, where I found some big bags of cotton loops. I got 4 10 oz. bags, and 1 7 oz. bag with a loom. I figure if I get tired of knitting, I can weave potholders. They also had some pretty pink sparkly plastic needles in 35's which I had to have. I got home, and made this GIGANTIC BALL OF YARN. I don't know what it weighs. I started knitting with my straight pretty sparkly pink needles, and it was torture. Back to JoAnn's, (armed with my 50% off coupon) to purchase some Lion Brand circular 35's. Much easier to knit with. Progress is slow, though, on this Superfancy potholder loop rug.

While at Joann's, I had to check out the kitchen cotton, and since it was July 4th, I thought it would be unpatriotic to pass up a ball of Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton in "Americana".

It knit up nicely into this Mason Dixon Washcloth.

I've just returned from Michael's and Hobby Lobby with some mercerized cotton for mitred squares. I got some Paton's Grace in Red and Black (Go Dawgs!) and brown and blue, and then got some Sinfonia in Hot pink, lime green, orange, yellow and turquoise. I've got to get knitting!

Wow! You are on a roll! What an inspiration!

Your post sounds fun. . . I miss ATLANTA. We lived there for most of our lives--it will always be home. So, your post also makes me homesick again. (But in a good way.) Please post your WIP if you can! Besides Why Knot Knit, are there any other yarn stores you especially like in Atlanta/Buckhead/Vinings area? Just started knitting a few months ago--so never went yarn-shopping while we lived in Atlanta. Have to know where to look on my next visit back! Can't find what I'm looking for very easily in D.C. area--at least not at a reasonable price. May have to stock up in Atlanta!

Debbie--I do love WKK and Monica, too! There is that Hobby Lobby at Stone Mtn, that may be closer to you. I was at michael's in snellville, and they have cotton loops, too, (in better colors, I think) for about the same price. They also have nylon loops in fabulous neon colors, but I don't want nylon.

Kathy--since I live OTP, I know about the main stores--Why Knot Knit, Nease's (Decatur), Needlenook (Briarcliff). Then you have Strings and Strands (I've not gone there) on Wieuca. Cast On Cottage in Roswell is great. There is The Whole Nine Yarns in Woodstock. Margaret's Yarns Down Under in Monroe is well worth the trip. There is All That Yarn in Snellville. and The Yarn Garden in Lawrenceville. You could do a tour one of the times you're home. And come home with a lot of stash.
