Starting the bathmat

As mentioned in an earlier discussion, this bathmat calls for Peaches & Creme double worsted. Because no one in my area carries this weight, and I need to finish it by Friday for a housewarming gift, I'm improvising and knitting with four strands of Sugar'n Cream worsted held together.

So far, so good! I checked my gauge to see how this little experiment was turning out. After knitting the center patch and two strips, my gauge is 9.5 sts + 17 rows = 4". The pattern's gauge is 9 sts + 17 rows = 4". I'm interested to see what the finished dimensions will be.

Despite its bulk, this bathmat is going to be really soft and squishy between the toes! I'm going to have to make another one for myself.

Comments:
ooh I love it!

Is it hard to work with all those strands? It looks great, btw.

It looks great! I'm also digging the gnome sheets/tablecloth...very cute.

I have really wanted to make that, and your picture really inspires me! Great work!

Looks great! I can't wait to see it finished and I can't wait to start my own!

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone!

Jocelyn - Holding the four strands together isn't that bad. The only difficulty so far was in picking up the stitches on the CO edge. I kept losing a strand because the edge was so tight. I need to cast on a little looser next time.

Mel - The gnomes are from my fav pj's. :) I laid the top on the table so that I could get a good shot of those neutral colors.

I'm doing the same, using a #13 needle. Try using a crochet hook to pick up the stitches. It works MUCH better!

ooh what a great idea! i've bene looking all over for the double worsted...and cant find it! i'll have to take your idea. i wonder how many balls of sugar n cream you will end up using...

Ooh...a crochet hook. I've gotta pick one up. Thanks for the tip!

I'll be sure to let everyone know approximately how many yards it took to finish the mat!

The bath mat looks soo good. I can't find any Peaches & Cream, and can only find a little bit of Sugar & Cream and it is in weird colors. Might have to order online. I can't wait to try the bathmat--IT is why I bought the book! Then daughter and I started knitting warshrags nonstop.
