Mitered squares and Dishcloths

I started my mitered squares last night. I thought they would take longer then they did. They are actually pretty quick. I also started a dishcloth this afternoon. It was a hard day teaching summer school and I needed a moment of quiet.
I am really happy with both of these projects. I am wondered though...the edges of my mitered squares are not perfect. The side where I carry the extra yarn is a little wonky. It probably will be fine when I block it and sew it to the next block but I just wondered if it's suppose to look that way or if I'm doing it wrong.

Mitered Squares

Mitered Square, originally uploaded by Mandy K.

As much as I have been wanting to knit from the book, I have been trying to finish some projects I have already started.

My compromise has been to start a mitered square blanket with some Cotton Classic I already had. I am on my eleventh square and have come up with a basic design. I am planning a variation on nine patch, with four squares of skinny stripes, four squares of double-width and with the center to be named later.

This has been the perfect project to carry along and knit when the others get annoying. I am due in the beginning of August and hope to finish this and a matching quilt for by now 21-month-old daughter by the time the new baby comes. Just 25 squares more!

I've caught the mitered madness!

I have to say that I've officially been diagnosed with miter madness! I love knitting them up...there is something so satisfying about knitting these small stripy squares. I've talked about this afghan over at my blog, but I thought I'd share it here too. My sister is having a baby at the end of this month, and since I come from a family of knitters we thought we'd knit this little baby boy an afghan! What you are looking at it is almost (we're not quite done yet!) 80 little mitered squares! There were 6 of us knitting on it, so it has gone really quickly. Lots of love went into knitting this afghan. His mommy, daddy, aunt (that's me!), 2 grandma's, and one great grandma all helped in knitting it. Now comes the daunting task of seaming it all up!

These squares were knit with Tahki Cotton Classic. I love this yarn...it's a mercerized cotton and a real joy to work with. Each square is knit in garter stitch. You just cast on 48 stitches and decrease in the center by knitting 2 together twice every other row. Easy peasy! I would love any tips that people have for seaming these squares up. Of course I'll be looking to the Mason Dixon girls and their fabulous book for help, but any other tips would be much appreciated!! Thanks!

Mitered Purse

Last summer, I was inspired to make a mitered-square tote bag - a panel of 4 squares on each side. And I wanted it to be in those crazy colors that I remember from those 90s windbreaker suits. I started running out of yarn, so it became a clutch.

I knit these squares off-and-on throughout 2006. (One was created on a road trip to Atlanta.)

Basically I seamed together 4 mitered squares, then mattress-stitched them up the sides. I picked up 6 stitches along one edge, knit a garter stitch strap, bound off the strap and then stitched it to the other side.

I'm toying with the idea of felting it. Anyone have an opinion on that?

I'll add a liner when it's all said and done so that it won't buckle when I carry it. Maybe it needs a zipper, too...

I enjoyed doing the miters but I don't know if I have the stamina for a full-blown blanket. So much work and time, and my perfectionist-nature won't let me fudge on the seaming - I know I'd agonize over making those stripes line up! I really respect those of you who have taken on the blanket.

Details: Cascade 220, colors... um, I forgot

Mitered squares

Hello everyone, I just joined the KAL although I have been hanging out and reading here for awhile. I have decided to make the mitered squares blanket (although I have been trying to talk myself out of it every since I bought the book) I really really like it and seeing as how Kaffe Fassett is my favorite quilter I have decided I must knit this blanket.
I would like to use Cotton classic but I'm having a hard time finding a place that carries a good variety of it. I also read that someone used Sonata. I haven't used that before. Is it similiar to Cotton Classic.
Any yarn suggestions or places to purchase the yarn would be great. Thank you.

MItered squares

Hi everyone. Here are my 2 finished squares for Jennifer's mitered blanket project. I still have yarn left, so I will keep making squares :)

Mitered Square Dishcloth

Yesterday I made a mitered square dishcloth. I needed to take a break from my log cabin blanket. The logs of the blanket are getting longer and slower to knit. I've been wanting to try the mitered square and it was quick. I liked using a varigated yarn and then I made a border to prevent the edges from curling. The border is a log cabin border which I got the idea from Domino Knitting by Vivian Hoxbro. In the book there is a section on making potholders while learning different modular or domino knitting techniques which are like mitered squares. I plan on maybe making one more mitered square dishcloth and then go back to my log cabin blankie.

I had a Rowenta when Rowenta wasn't cool.

There's nothing like a blast of German engineered steam to freshen up mitered squares after a lengthy trip through the postal system. Stephanie B. sent the two squares on the left after a trip to Korea. Thank goodness they weren't confiscated! My grandmother will be sewing up the cute Baby Soft squares on the right that were sent in by Lynn. Squared Away

Check out the mitered squares that came in the mail today!

This lovely patriotic set came from Julie. I love how the white makes the colors pop.

Leslie sent 4, count em', 4 squares in my favorite color combo.

There are 3 squares left for me to finish knitting before I can start sewing up my Cotton-Ease blankie. I see a lot of mattress stitch in my future. Bring it on! Posted by Picasa

Mitered Squares

For anyone who has done a mitered square blanket. What did you do for washing and blocking, each one individually, in bigger squares of four or the whole blanket (my dorm's not big enough!)? And a question regarding charitable knitting on my blog.

Even More Squares

Can you believe these awesome squares sent in by Paula? My mom and I marveled over her tidy little stitches. She also sent the cutest warshcloth and coaster.

Francie sent these great nubby squares made from Paton Paradice. The photo does not do justice to the squares or the amazing mitered square PEN. I will be grading many papers with this little fella. So far we have two almost completed mitered square blankets. They are just waiting for my mom to add the border. I hope to start assembling the third blanket tomorrow. Once again, I am blown away by all of this group's support and generosity. Thanks a million!!!

BTW: this project may be turning my mom into a yarn snob. She kept on asking exactly what type of cotton Paula and Francie used. Posted by Picasa

Check this out...Mitered Square Skirt

If you love mitered sqaures, you should check out this pattern for a little girl's skirt at MagKnits It is inspired by MD mitered squares according to the designer. It is soo cute. I might need to make this for my 3 year dauughter, probably in pink & purple and definitely not wool (her words "too scratchy".

I am still knitting away on my Circle of Fun Rug in between other projects and I hope to finish it someday soon.

It's for a great cause! And it's true, miters really do increase your endorphins.

What's wrong with this picture?

Look closely and you will see what happens when you sew up mitered squares while watching late night TV. Should I rip and redo or call it a design feature?

Look at the cute little denim squares sent in by Stephanie. The yarn is very soft and cotton-y. Thanks so much!

Mason-Dixon Burp Cloths

I am still having a blast knitting Mason-Dixon items. I have started mitered squares from my home spun mixed with commercial yarn. I am hoping to use up some of my stash. I have posted my first two squares at my blog! Everyone keep cool today if you are in the heat wave areas.

Fun with Photo Shop

I spent the good part of the morning sewing together mitered squares for a baby blanket. I am planning on adding a border, but wanted to take a couple of photos pre-border. When uploading the photos I decided to use a fun crop and came up with this mitered flower. I guess I am just wishing for spring.

Another NinePatch

I just couldn't resist and had to try the Ninepatch Dishcloth.

It is such a cute cloth and a great way to use up left over bits of cotton yarn. I am a fairly slow knitter, but this was so quick! And it was my first attempt at the mitered squares. Now I am wondering if I should try, do I dare say, a mitered square blanket??? Maybe I'll just make a few more of these first! :-)

At long last it's done!

You forget just how long it takes to put together a blanket of this size (Single bed size!) AND do the edging.

Other Postings Relating To This One: see my blog http://minxxy.typepad.com/ and search the archives

Top tips : block as you go along. I knitted 8 squares (2 large ones when put together) then blocked them as I knit the next 8. Saves on all all that pinning out at one time. Easier on the back and old knees!
